What I really like about the venue is how connected everything feels. The ceremony, drinks reception, wedding breakfast and evening celebrations can all happen within the same private setting, so guests are never being moved around unnecessarily and the day can settle into its own rhythm.
I photographed Chloe and Armani’s wedding here, which gave me the chance to see how the venue works across a full day. Their celebration had a bit of everything: emotional ceremony moments, live music, garden games, pond-side portraits, countryside photographs, warm evening light and a lively party later on.
That day showed me how much variety there is around the venue without needing to go very far. The barns give the gallery warmth and texture, while the gardens, pond, fields and open countryside create a completely different feel outside.
My approach is relaxed, natural and documentary-led. I’ll guide you when it helps, but most of the day is about letting you enjoy the wedding while I capture the people, atmosphere and moments happening around you.

The Barn at Upcote is family-run and set around an English country garden courtyard, with several connected stone barns forming the heart of the venue.
That layout is one of the things that makes it work so well.
Guests can move between the courtyard, barns and grounds without the wedding feeling spread out, and the venue remains completely private because it operates on an exclusive-use basis.
The result is a setting that has plenty of Cotswolds character without feeling overly formal.
For photography, that means I can move between candid moments in the courtyard, wider countryside photographs and the warmer atmosphere inside the barns without needing to take the couple away for long.
Wedding Ceremonies at The Barn at Upcote
The venue is licensed for civil ceremonies and currently offers both indoor and outdoor options. Couples can also choose a celebrant or humanist ceremony, or marry at a nearby church before returning to the venue.
Ceremonies in the Threshing Barn
The Threshing Barn is one of the main ceremony and reception spaces.
Its stone walls, exposed beams and larger scale give the ceremony plenty of character while still allowing guests to feel close to the couple.
From a photography perspective, the room gives me enough space to capture the entrance, vows and reactions without needing to continually move through the ceremony.
The same space can later be transformed for the wedding breakfast, which helps keep the day connected rather than making guests move between completely separate areas.
Outdoor Ceremonies
Couples can also marry outside in the courtyard and garden areas.
This brings the surrounding greenery and stone barns directly into the ceremony photographs, while still keeping everyone close to the rest of the venue.

Outdoor ceremonies lead naturally into drinks afterwards, because guests are already gathered around the courtyard and gardens.

Chloe and Armani’s wedding showed just how much variety can be created without disappearing for a long portrait session.
We used a few different parts of the venue at the points when the light and atmosphere worked best, then got them straight back to their guests.
Couple Photographs Around the Grounds
The Barn at Upcote has several useful portrait areas within easy walking distance.
The Secret Garden, surrounding fields, woodland and pond all give the photographs a softer countryside feel, while the stone barns and courtyard keep part of the gallery closely tied to the venue itself. The venue specifically highlights the Secret Garden, surrounding fields and woodland as photography locations.
For Chloe and Armani, the pond-side photographs became a really distinctive part of their gallery, while the open fields worked beautifully later in the evening when the light softened.
I prefer to keep this part of the wedding relaxed. I’ll give you enough direction so you never feel awkward, but the aim is for it to feel like a short walk together rather than a formal photoshoot.
Golden-Hour Photography
The open fields around the venue can be especially good once the stronger afternoon light begins to soften.
Chloe and Armani had some really beautiful warm light later in their wedding, which gave us the chance to step into the countryside for a few quieter photographs.
I never build the whole timeline around one fixed sunset session.
Instead, I keep an eye on what the light is doing throughout the reception.
If it starts looking particularly good, we can step outside for ten or fifteen minutes and then head straight back to the party.
The countryside also works well on cloudier evenings, so we are never relying on one specific type of weather to make the photographs work.
Wedding Breakfasts and Evening Celebrations
The Threshing Barn currently seats up to 120 guests for a formal wedding breakfast, while the Grain Store offers a more intimate option for up to around 50. Couples can also divide tables across the different spaces for a more informal setup. This flexibility means the reception can feel very different depending on the guest list.
During speeches, I’m not only photographing whoever has the microphone. I’m looking for the reactions around the room: friends laughing, parents becoming emotional and the couple realising exactly where a story is going.
Later, the barns can move into a much more lively evening setup, with the bar and music continuing until midnight. The Grain Store and Sheep Shed also have fairy lights built into their setup, which helps the venue feel noticeably warmer once daylight disappears.

What Happens if It Rains?
The Barn at Upcote works well in poor weather because the barns themselves already have plenty of character.
The Threshing Barn, Grain Store, Sheep Shed and Cart Lodge give the wedding several indoor spaces rather than relying on one plain wet-weather backup room.
The venue also provides gazebos, umbrellas and underfloor heating as part of its all-weather setup.
When shorter dry periods appear, the courtyard, Secret Garden and fields are close enough that we can step outside quickly for a few photographs without holding up the rest of the day.
The plan is always to adapt around the weather rather than make the wedding wait for it.
Getting Ready at The Barn at Upcote
The Barn at Upcote works well in poor weather because the barns themselves already have plenty of character.
The Threshing Barn, The Hay Barn Honeymoon Suite, becomes available from 11 am on the wedding day and can be used for final preparations before the ceremony.
For couples who need somewhere earlier in the morning, the venue currently recommends nearby dedicated Bridal Prep Rooms.
Having the final preparation space within the courtyard can make the transition into the ceremony feel much easier.
From a photography perspective, it also means less travel once the main part of the day begins and more time to concentrate on the final details, nerves, and moments with the people around you.
Staying at The Barn at Upcote
The Hay Barn Honeymoon Suite is included with venue hire and is available until the following morning, with a continental breakfast delivered to the door.
Most wedding guests stay in Cheltenham or in cottages and hotels around the surrounding Cotswold villages.
The venue is only around ten minutes from Cheltenham and provides several recommended accommodation and transport options, which can make planning easier for guests travelling from further away.
On selected dates, glamping options may also be available.

Trying to over-direct a day like that would have taken away from what made it special. Instead, I’ll step in when it helps, particularly for family photographs and couple portraits, then spend the rest of the day watching for what is already happening.
