Haselbury Mill is a venue that feels particularly personal to me.
I got married here myself in 2017, long before returning with a camera to photograph Steph and Paul’s wedding. It was actually one of the places that helped inspire me to become a wedding photographer in the first place, so coming back years later to document somebody else’s celebration felt pretty surreal.
The venue itself has loads of character. The historic buildings, Tithe Barn, gardens and lakeside areas all sit together within a private Somerset estate, which means the ceremony, drinks reception, wedding breakfast and evening celebrations can flow naturally without guests constantly moving between separate locations.
Having experienced Haselbury Mill from both sides, as a groom and as a photographer, gives me a slightly different perspective on how the place feels during a real wedding day.
I know how quickly everything seems to go when you are actually the one getting married, which is one of the reasons my approach is relaxed and documentary-led. I’ll guide you when it genuinely helps, but most of the day is about letting you enjoy it while I capture what is happening around you.

A Wedding Venue With a Personal Connection
Most venue pages on my website are written from the perspective of somebody who has photographed a wedding there.
Haselbury Mill is a little different.
I know what it feels like to stand here on your own wedding day, wondering where the time has gone and trying to take everything in while being pulled into conversations, photographs and celebrations from every direction.
That experience genuinely shapes the way I photograph weddings now.
I don’t want couples spending huge chunks of their day away from the people they invited. I want portraits to feel easy, family photographs to be organised efficiently and the majority of the day to be spent actually enjoying the wedding.
Haselbury Mill suits that approach really well because the important spaces are close together and the grounds give us plenty of variety without needing to disappear elsewhere.
The Tithe Barn at Haselbury Mill
The Tithe Barn is the centre of the wedding experience at Haselbury Mill.
Its high ceilings, exposed timber beams and abundance of natural light give the room plenty of character during the day, while the space becomes warmer and more atmospheric once the evening celebrations begin.
The barn currently seats up to 120 guests and can be used for the ceremony, wedding breakfast and evening party, which means the same room changes throughout the day rather than guests continually moving between separate buildings.
That works particularly well photographically.
During the ceremony, the scale of the barn gives me room to photograph the entrance, vows and reactions without becoming distracting. Later, the same exposed beams and historic character provide a completely different backdrop for speeches, food and the dance floor.
With direct access to the bar, lounge and terrace, guests can also move naturally between inside and outside as the day develops.

Haselbury Mill offers both indoor and outdoor ceremony options, so couples can choose between the character of the historic buildings and the surrounding gardens.
Ceremonies in the Tithe Barn
The Tithe Barn creates a warm, rustic ceremony setting with exposed beams, high ceilings and plenty of room for guests.
Because the ceremony can take place in the same space later used for the wedding breakfast and evening celebration, the day feels connected and easy to follow.
From a photography perspective, the size of the barn gives me enough room to capture the entrance, vows, first kiss and reactions around the guests without continually moving through the ceremony.
Outdoor Ceremonies
Haselbury Mill also has outdoor ceremony spaces around its landscaped grounds and lakeside setting.
The gardens bring a much softer countryside feel to the ceremony photographs, with greenery, water and the surrounding estate becoming part of the backdrop.
Outdoor ceremonies also lead naturally into drinks and congratulations afterwards, because everyone is already gathered in the grounds rather than needing to move from one part of the venue to another.

Drinks Receptions and Candid Photography
The grounds around Haselbury Mill work really well once the ceremony is finished and everybody begins to relax.
Guests can move between the terrace, gardens, lakeside areas and indoor spaces without becoming too spread out, which creates plenty of opportunities for natural photographs.

Having everything so close together means we can create a varied gallery without spending a large part of the wedding travelling or disappearing for photographs.
Usually, a short walk around the venue is plenty.
Couple Photographs Around Haselbury Mill
Haselbury Mill offers several different looks within a fairly compact area.
The older stone buildings and mill architecture provide plenty of texture and character, while the lawns, gardens and lakeside areas create softer countryside backdrops. For Steph and Paul, we kept their portraits simple and relaxed, making use of the venue itself rather than treating the photographs like a separate photoshoot.
That is generally how I prefer to work here. I’ll give you enough direction so you never feel awkward, but I don’t want to march you around every corner of the estate just because it exists. We’ll choose a few areas that work particularly well with the light and weather at that point in the day, spend ten or fifteen minutes together and then get you back to your guests.
Golden-Hour and Evening Photography
The open grounds around Haselbury Mill can work beautifully once the light begins to soften.
I don’t build the whole day around a fixed golden-hour session because Somerset weather has other ideas far too often.
Instead, I keep an eye on what the light is doing.
If we get a particularly nice evening, we can step outside for a short walk around the gardens or lake before heading back inside.
Once it gets darker, the venue changes again. The historic buildings, warm barn lighting and outdoor areas can all be used for a completely different set of evening photographs without needing to leave the estate.
Wedding Breakfasts and Evening Celebrations
One of the benefits of the Tithe Barn is how differently it feels once the ceremony has finished and the room is set for the reception. By the time everyone sits down for food and speeches, the exposed timber and warm interior give the room a much more relaxed atmosphere.
During speeches, I’m not only photographing whoever is standing with the microphone. I’m watching the tables around the room for laughter, tears, knowing looks and reactions to stories the couple may have heard a hundred times before.
Steph and Paul’s wedding also included something particularly personal, with some of Steph’s senior Razzmatazz students performing between the main course and dessert. Later, their ceilidh brought a completely different sort of energy, including a brilliant moment where they made their way through a tunnel of raised hands from their guests.
Those are exactly the kinds of things I love photographing because they could only have happened at their wedding.
What Happens if It Rains?
Haselbury Mill works well even if the weather refuses to cooperate.
The Tithe Barn is already a substantial, characterful part of the venue, so the ceremony, wedding breakfast, speeches and candid photography do not suddenly become compromised because everybody needs to stay inside.
The Millers Lounge and other indoor areas provide additional space around the main barn, while shorter dry periods can be used for family photographs or a quick walk outside.
The gardens and lakeside spaces are also close enough that we do not need a huge gap in the weather. If it stops raining for ten minutes, that may be all we need.
The aim is always to adapt around the conditions rather than let the forecast dictate the entire wedding.

How I Photograph Weddings at Haselbury Mill
My approach is relaxed, natural, candid and documentary-led.
Having actually been married at Haselbury Mill myself has probably reinforced that approach more than anything.
I know how quickly the day disappears when you are the one in the middle of it.
The last thing I want to do is take a couple away for an hour while all the people they care about are having a brilliant time somewhere else.
I’ll guide you when it helps, particularly for family photographs and couple portraits, but I keep those parts simple.
For the rest of the wedding, I’m watching for what is already happening: reactions during the ceremony, conversations outside, laughter during speeches, personal performances and the chaos once the evening celebrations really get started.
The venue provides the setting, but the photographs should still be about you and the people around you.
