Hidden within the Somerset countryside just outside Bath, Priston Mill is a historic wedding venue with two very different spaces: the stone-built Tythe Barn and the ancient Watermill.
The venue sits within a quiet valley surrounded by gardens, streams and open countryside. That creates plenty of variety throughout the day, while everything remains close enough for the ceremony, drinks reception, wedding breakfast and evening celebrations to flow naturally. Priston Mill is also within easy reach of Bath and Bristol, making it feel secluded without being especially remote for guests.
I have photographed two full weddings at Priston Mill, both held in the Tythe Barn, including Lauren and Rowan’s celebration and Dani and Eva’s Spanish wedding. Photographing two weddings here within the same week gave me the chance to see how differently the same venue can feel depending on the people, styling, traditions and atmosphere of the day.
That experience means I understand how the Tythe Barn works from the ceremony through to the evening, where guests naturally gather during the drinks reception and how to use the gardens and surrounding countryside without taking couples away for a lengthy photoshoot.

It also means there is plenty of photographic variety nearby, without couples needing to spend long periods away from everyone they have invited.

The Tythe Barn at Priston Mill
Dating from the 1720s, the Tythe Barn is a restored stone-walled building surrounded by gardens and views across the Somerset countryside. It can host ceremonies and wedding breakfasts for approximately 50 to 150 guests, with its mezzanine helping accommodate the larger end of that range.
The long aisle makes the ceremony entrance feel particularly striking, while the high roof, exposed beams and stone walls create a strong sense of character throughout the photographs.
What I particularly like about photographing weddings here is that the scale of the room does not remove its warmth. During Lauren and Rowan’s ceremony, the barn still felt close and emotional, while Dani and Eva’s wedding showed how the same space could support a much livelier celebration filled with music, dancing and cultural traditions.
The Parlour also provides a smaller adjoining space with low beams, fairy lights, comfortable seating and a cast-iron stove. It brings another layer of character to the venue and gives guests somewhere more intimate to gather during the day.
The Watermill at Priston Mill
The Watermill offers a very different atmosphere from the Tythe Barn.
The site’s history stretches back to at least the 10th century, when the mill and surrounding land were granted by King Athelstan to the monastic estate connected with Bath Abbey. The building still contains its large waterwheel, gears and historic machinery, giving it a character that cannot easily be recreated in a more modern wedding venue.
The Watermill is licensed for ceremonies of up to 90 guests and is particularly suited to couples planning a more intimate celebration. Ceremonies can take place on its upper floor, with views across the millpond, while a lift provides access between the building’s two levels.
Outside, the private gardens include lawns, a brook, a pergola and a pagoda used for outdoor ceremonies. These spaces give Watermill weddings a softer, garden-led feel compared with the larger stone setting of the Tythe Barn.
Although I have not yet photographed a full wedding inside the Watermill, knowing the difference between the two spaces is important when helping couples think about their photography plans. A Watermill wedding will naturally have a more compact flow and different opportunities from a larger day in the Tythe Barn.

Priston Mill is licensed for civil ceremonies in both the Tythe Barn and the Watermill, with outdoor options also available within the gardens.
Ceremonies in the Tythe Barn
The Tythe Barn’s long aisle, high beams and stone interior create a dramatic entrance and an atmospheric setting for the vows.
Because the room is spacious, I can photograph the entrance, reactions and exchange of vows from different positions without needing to move distractingly through the ceremony.
Ceremonies in the Watermill
Watermill ceremonies take place in a more intimate historic setting, surrounded by original features, exposed stone and the building’s working mill machinery.
The more compact layout can make the ceremony feel especially personal, while still giving me enough room to photograph the entrance, vows and guests’ reactions naturally without becoming a distraction.
Outdoor Ceremonies
The Watermill gardens include a licensed pagoda, surrounded by lawns, flowers, and the sound of the nearby water.
Priston Mill often prepares both an outdoor and indoor option when weather is uncertain, allowing the final decision to be made with the conditions in mind.
Whichever location you choose, my focus remains on the people and emotions within the ceremony rather than simply photographing the building around you.
Drinks Receptions and Candid Photography
The gardens around Priston Mill work particularly well for the time immediately after the ceremony.
Guests can move outside for drinks, congratulations and conversations while remaining close to the main venue. The lawns, paths and surrounding countryside give everyone enough space to relax without the drinks reception becoming too spread out.
This is often one of the strongest parts of the day for documentary photography. Everyone has begun to settle into the celebration, and there are hugs, introductions and spontaneous reactions happening in different directions.

Having photographed two complete weddings in the Tythe Barn, I know that the best use of the venue does not require couples to leave their guests for a long portrait session.
A short walk around the grounds is usually enough to create a varied set of photographs, with the option of stepping outside briefly again if the evening light becomes particularly good.
Natural Couple Photographs Around Priston Mill
The gardens and surrounding countryside provide several options for couple photographs without needing to travel elsewhere.
Close to the venue, the stone buildings, garden paths, rose-covered archways, lawns and mature planting create softer, more enclosed settings. Beyond them, the open fields and rolling Somerset landscape give the photographs a broader countryside feel.
For Lauren and Rowan and Dani and Eva, we were able to create relaxed portraits around the venue while keeping them connected to the celebration. James’s existing galleries also show tall grass, open countryside, garden foliage and wide aerial views of the property.
I generally keep this part of the day simple. I will give you enough direction to avoid feeling awkward, but there is no need to work through a long list of poses.

The Tythe Barn and Watermill are both substantial indoor venues rather than simple wet-weather backups. Ceremonies, receptions, speeches and evening celebrations can continue inside without losing the historic atmosphere of the setting.
If there are short breaks in the rain, the gardens and nearby paths make it possible to step outside for a small number of photographs without keeping the rest of the wedding waiting.
For family photographs, we can decide whether to use an indoor area or work quickly outside depending on the conditions, mobility needs and group sizes.

How I Photograph Weddings at Priston Mill
My approach is relaxed, natural, and documentary-led.
For most of the wedding, I work around what is already happening rather than stopping the day to arrange photographs. I focus on the anticipation before the ceremony, reactions during the vows, conversations in the gardens, laughter through the speeches and everything happening once the dance floor opens.
I will still guide you when it helps. Family photographs benefit from a little organisation, while simple direction during couple portraits means you will never be left wondering what to do.
