Having the morning unfold around the same estate can make the photography feel much more connected. It reduces unnecessary travel and allows me to move between the preparations more easily when the timings permit.
The morning photographs are not only about dresses, suits and details. They also capture the quieter parts of the day: gifts being exchanged, friends helping one another, last-minute nerves and the anticipation building before the ceremony begins.

For Abi and Josh’s wedding, the ceremony took place beneath the awning outside The Cider Barn. Abi walked towards the ceremony from the barn, with the surrounding greenery creating a natural backdrop for the vows and guests’ reactions.
Outdoor ceremonies work particularly well here because the setting already has so much character. Couples can keep the styling simple and allow the surrounding landscape to form part of the atmosphere.
From a photography perspective, the open layout also allows me to capture the ceremony from different positions without becoming distracting. That means the aisle, vows, reactions and moments immediately afterwards can all be documented naturally.

During these parts of the day, I concentrate on more than the person speaking or the couple on the dance floor. The expressions around the room are often just as important: someone laughing before the punchline, a parent becoming emotional or friends reacting to a story they recognise. This part of the wedding rarely needs much intervention. While you enjoy seeing everyone properly, I can concentrate on the hugs, laughter, reunions and small interactions happening around you.

Having photographed complete wedding days here, I know that the setting can be used without taking couples away from the celebration for long.
A short walk at the right point in the day is often enough to create a varied set of portraits. That leaves the majority of the wedding free for you to spend with your guests rather than disappearing for an extended photoshoot.

Rather than placing you into a long sequence of fixed poses, I will usually give you a little direction and allow you to walk, talk and spend a few quiet minutes together. Both of the weddings I have photographed at The Cider Barn gave us memorable evening light. Abi and Josh had a warm Somerset sunset across the landscape, while Louise and Christian’s brief rain shower cleared to reveal golden light across the fields.
Golden hour is never something I force into the day. The exact light depends on the season, cloud cover, weather, and wedding timings.
Instead, I keep an eye on the conditions. When the light looks particularly good, we can step outside for ten or fifteen minutes before returning to the reception. That approach gives you the opportunity for beautiful evening photographs without making the entire schedule revolve around them.
What Happens if It Rains?
A countryside wedding does not need continuous sunshine to photograph beautifully.
Louise and Christian’s day included a short rain shower, but the changing weather later created some of the strongest evening light of the wedding.
If rain arrives, the day does not need to stop. The barn remains full of atmosphere for candid photographs, details, speeches and time with guests. When there is a short break in the weather, we can step outside for a few portraits without making the entire day wait for the forecast.
My approach is to remain flexible rather than insisting on a fixed photographic plan. British weather often changes quickly, and knowing the venue helps me respond to those opportunities when they appear.

That means I am not there to turn the wedding into a staged production or constantly ask people to repeat moments for the camera. For most of the day, I observe what is happening and photograph it honestly.
I will still offer direction when it is useful. Family photographs benefit from a little organisation, and most couples appreciate some gentle guidance during portraits. The important part is that this never takes over the day.
