A Clearwell Castle Wedding Photographer
Clearwell Castle is one of those venues where the setting immediately gives the wedding a real sense of occasion.
Set within the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, the castle combines grand interiors with open grounds, gardens and woodland surroundings. It feels impressive from the moment you arrive, but once the wedding gets going, the venue still gives guests plenty of space to relax and enjoy the day without everything feeling overly formal.
I’ve photographed two full weddings here so far: Abbie and Jordan, and Becky and Rob. That means I’ve experienced Clearwell Castle in very different conditions too.
Abbie and Jordan’s wedding took place during Storm Darragh, which limited how much we could use the grounds, while Becky and Rob’s day gave me another opportunity to work with the castle interiors, staircase, ceremony spaces, gardens and outdoor portraits.
That experience is useful because Clearwell is one of those venues where having strong indoor options genuinely matters. Even when the weather is doing its worst, there are still beautiful spaces to work with.

My approach is relaxed, candid and documentary-led. I’ll step in with some direction when it helps, but most of the day is about letting the wedding happen and capturing the people and atmosphere around you.

A Castle Wedding Venue in the Forest of Dean
Clearwell Castle sits within around 20 acres of grounds in the Forest of Dean, giving couples the scale and atmosphere of a castle wedding without losing the privacy of an exclusive-use venue.
The exterior is obviously one of the venue’s strongest features, but what makes Clearwell particularly useful for weddings is what happens inside.
There are several different reception rooms, bars, the Ballroom, library spaces, quieter rooms and a dedicated Cellar Bar for the evening party.
That means the day naturally changes as it progresses.
The ceremony can feel grand and formal, drinks can become much more relaxed, dinner brings everyone together again, and then the evening party moves into a completely different atmosphere.
For photography, that progression is brilliant.
The gallery does not have to look like the same room photographed from five different angles.
Wedding Ceremonies at Clearwell Castle
Clearwell Castle currently offers indoor and outdoor ceremony options for up to 150 guests.
Ceremonies in the Ballroom
The Ballroom is the main indoor ceremony space and one of Clearwell Castle’s most distinctive features.
It has a 75-foot-long aisle, high ceilings, chandeliers, leaded lancet windows and a raised dais at the front. The room has a church-like feel without actually being a church, which gives ceremonies a real sense of occasion.
Photographically, the long aisle is especially useful.
It gives me plenty of time to capture the entrance properly, from the wider view of the room to closer reactions as the couple sees one another.
The large windows and neutral interior also give the ceremony much more usable light than you might expect from a castle.
I can work quietly around the edges, photograph the vows and guests’ reactions and keep movement through the ceremony to a minimum.
Outdoor Ceremonies at the Bandstand and Castle Steps
Clearwell also offers two outdoor ceremony options.
The Bandstand
The Bandstand sits within the gardens with the castle behind it, giving couples a much more open ceremony setting while still keeping the venue itself central to the photographs.
The surrounding greenery softens the setting and gives the ceremony a completely different feel from the Ballroom.
It also makes the transition into drinks afterwards really easy because guests are already outside.
The Castle Steps
Couples can also marry directly in front of the castle on the steps.
This creates a more architectural ceremony backdrop, with the main façade becoming part of the photographs from the beginning.
For both outdoor options, the exact setup naturally depends on weather and venue arrangements, so it is worth confirming the latest wet-weather backup with Clearwell before the wedding.
Drinks Receptions and Candid Photography
Once the ceremony is finished, Clearwell Castle gives guests several places to relax.
The Drawing Room Bar, Cocktail Terrace, croquet lawn and wider grounds all help spread the drinks reception naturally without making people feel disconnected.
This is usually when I stop directing almost entirely.

Family members spending time together
People heading out onto the terrace
Croquet and garden games
Children exploring the venue
Dogs getting involved

All the small conversations happening away from the couple
The Cocktail Terrace is especially useful because it gives guests an outdoor space without needing to wander far from the castle.

Because there is so much available, I do not think every couple needs to use every part of the venue.
The stronger approach is choosing the locations that work best with the weather, light and timeline on your actual wedding day.
Couple Photographs Around the Grounds
Clearwell Castle has loads of portrait options, but the best thing is that we can get plenty of variety without disappearing for ages.
The front of the castle gives you the obvious grand backdrop.
The gardens and tree-lined areas create something softer, while the surrounding Forest of Dean setting gives the gallery a completely different countryside feel.
Inside, the staircase, corridors and windows are really useful when the weather is poor.
Becky and Rob’s wedding is a good example of how many different looks we can create around the castle without making the portraits feel staged.
Their photographs moved between the grander interiors, outdoor spaces and relaxed moments with their dog.
Normally, ten or fifteen minutes is plenty for the main portrait session.
If the light looks particularly good later, we can always step outside again briefly.

Golden-Hour and Evening Photography
The Cocktail Terrace and grounds can work beautifully later in the day as the light begins to soften.
Clearwell itself highlights the terrace as a place to enjoy sunset, and because the gardens and castle exterior are immediately accessible, we do not need to build a huge gap into the timeline to make use of it.
If the light looks good, we can step outside for ten minutes. If it does not, there are still plenty of options. Abbie and Jordan’s wedding is a perfect reminder of that.
Storm Darragh meant we were never going to get a textbook golden hour, but the interiors still gave their gallery loads of atmosphere.
That is why I never want couples to feel like one particular weather condition is required for good photographs.
Wedding Breakfasts in the Ballroom

The high ceilings, lancet windows, marble pillars, chandeliers and feature arch give the room plenty of visual character, but its relatively neutral palette also means couples can style it in very different ways.
This is also where the speeches often happen. I’m not just photographing whoever has the microphone. I’m watching the whole room for reactions, because that is usually where the real story of a speech is happening.
Someone already knows where the story is going. A parent starts crying. The couple are trying not to laugh. Friends are looking at each other across the table.
Those moments are just as important as the speech itself.
Evening Celebrations in the Main Hall and Cellar Bar
Clearwell Castle gives couples two very different options for the evening.
The first dance can take place in the Main Hall for a more traditional castle atmosphere, or everyone can head downstairs to the Cellar Bar for a much more energetic party setup.
The Cellar Bar is a vaulted lower-level space designed specifically for evening celebrations, with a spacious dance floor, disco lighting and room for the venue DJ or a live band.
This is usually where the photography becomes much less polished.
By this point, I’m concentrating on energy.
First dance reactions, people singing along, friends dragging each other onto the dance floor and all the chaos that starts happening once everyone stops worrying about the timeline.
For guests who need a break, the venue also has a Quiet Room, Library and other reception spaces away from the main dance floor.
What Happens if It Rains?
Clearwell Castle is genuinely one of the easier venues to photograph in bad weather.
I know that firsthand because I photographed Abbie and Jordan’s wedding during Storm Darragh.
We had far fewer opportunities to use the grounds than we normally would, but the castle interiors meant the day never suddenly became photographically limited.
The Ballroom, staircase, corridors, Library, Drawing Room and other indoor spaces all give the gallery variety without feeling like emergency backup locations.
That is the difference.
If the rain stops, even briefly, we can still use the castle exterior or gardens.
But if it does not, there is more than enough inside to work with.
For couples worried about weather, that is a pretty big advantage.
A Relaxed Clearwell Castle Wedding Photography Timeline
Every wedding will be slightly different, but a full day here might look something like this:
Morning Preparations
Natural photographs inside the castle or nearby accommodation, focusing on the people, details and build-up before the ceremony.

Intimate and Larger Weddings
Clearwell Castle currently caters for a wide range of wedding sizes.
The venue offers intimate packages based around smaller celebrations, while the castle can accommodate up to 150 guests for the ceremony and wedding breakfast and up to 250 in the evening.
That flexibility is useful because the building still works when the guest list is smaller.
A 30-person wedding does not suddenly feel lost simply because the venue is a castle.
Equally, the Ballroom and evening spaces are large enough for celebrations with well over 100 guests.
From a photography point of view, the approach changes slightly with scale, but the focus does not.
I’m still looking for the relationships and moments happening within the celebration rather than trying to make the wedding feel bigger or smaller than it actually is.
Staying at Clearwell Castle
Accommodation is one of Clearwell Castle’s biggest practical advantages.
The venue currently advertises accommodation for more than 100 guests across the wider estate, including rooms within the Castle and additional accommodation at The Wyndham and surrounding buildings.
The Castle itself is complemented by accommodation including Coachman rooms, Wyndham Barn and Wyndham Lodge.
Certain packages include accommodation for 74 guests, while the venue’s overall accommodation capacity extends beyond 100.
The venue also offers night-before accommodation for up to around 50 guests depending on the package.
That can make the wedding feel much more settled.
Close family and friends can stay onsite, there is less pressure around taxis at the end of the evening and the celebration can continue into breakfast the following morning.
Exact room allocations vary by package, so I would always confirm the current setup directly with Clearwell.
How I Photograph Weddings at Clearwell Castle
My approach to wedding photography is relaxed, natural, candid and documentary-led.
Clearwell Castle is grand enough on its own.
It does not need me turning the entire wedding into a styled castle photoshoot.
The architecture, staircase, gardens and Ballroom already give the photographs a strong sense of place.
My job is to use those spaces while concentrating on what is happening within them.
That might be nerves before the ceremony, someone reacting halfway down the long Ballroom aisle, guests laughing over drinks, a dog watching preparations from a window, friends losing it during the speeches or the Cellar Bar becoming complete chaos later on.
Having photographed two weddings here also means I’ve experienced the venue in very different conditions.
I know how useful the interiors are when the weather is poor and where we can move quickly if the forecast suddenly changes.
I’ll organise family photographs efficiently and give you enough direction for portraits that you never feel awkward.
