Set just outside Exeter, Rockbeare Manor combines the elegance of a luxury Devon country house with the privacy and space of an exclusive-use wedding venue.
The Regency manor sits within open parkland, approached along a winding driveway before the house gradually comes into view. Inside, there are light-filled rooms, tall sash windows, chandeliers and beautifully restored period details, while outside the lawns and surrounding countryside give the day a much softer, more relaxed feel.
I’ve photographed Chessie and James’ wedding here, which gave me the chance to experience Rockbeare Manor across a complete wedding day, from preparations and the ceremony through to drinks, portraits, speeches and the evening celebrations.
What I particularly like about photographing weddings here is that the venue gives you all the elegance of a luxury wedding without forcing the photography to feel formal. There is plenty of room for guests to relax, several very different spaces to use and enough variety around the house and grounds that we do not need to disappear for a long portrait session.
My approach is relaxed, candid and documentary-led. I’ll offer some direction when it genuinely helps, but most of the day is about allowing you to enjoy the venue and the people around you while I capture what is happening naturally.

A Luxury Country House Wedding Venue in Devon
Rockbeare Manor describes itself as one of Devon’s elegant exclusive-use country house wedding venues, and the luxury here is very much in the detail.
The house has been carefully restored while retaining the proportions and architectural character of a Regency manor. The original sash windows, fireplaces, decorative plasterwork and period rooms sit alongside modern comforts, giving the venue a polished feel without losing its history.
What I like is that it does not feel as though couples need to match that grandeur with an overly formal wedding.
Once guests spread between the house, Terrace and parkland, the atmosphere can become really relaxed. That balance works beautifully for documentary photography because I can use the architecture and surroundings without making the wedding feel like a styled shoot.
The exclusive-use setup helps too. Rockbeare Manor is dedicated to one wedding at a time, so the whole house and grounds become part of the celebration rather than being shared with another event.
Getting Ready at Rockbeare Manor.
The wedding morning is particularly well thought out at Rockbeare Manor.
The bridal party currently has access from 11:30am, with the Drawing Room available for preparations. Floor-to-ceiling windows and an elegant balcony bring plenty of natural light into the space, which makes it a brilliant setting for makeup, final details and those quieter moments before the ceremony.
The Billiard Room provides a separate preparation space for the other side of the wedding party, with darker, more traditional interiors and its own character.
Having both sides preparing onsite can be really useful photographically. When timings allow, I can move between the two without losing time travelling between separate hotels or houses.
More importantly, it means the story of the day begins in the same place where everything else is about to happen.
Wedding Ceremonies at Rockbeare Manor
Rockbeare Manor is licensed for civil ceremonies and currently offers several different options depending on guest numbers and the atmosphere you want.
Ceremonies in the Dining Room
The Dining Room is one of the most characterful ceremony spaces in the house.
Dating back nearly 250 years, it features Adam-style decorative plasterwork, marble pillars, a large crystal chandelier, a feature fireplace and tall sash windows overlooking the South Lawns and fountain. It currently seats up to 100 guests for a civil ceremony.
For photography, the combination of large windows and historic detail gives the room plenty of atmosphere without feeling dark or heavy.
The more intimate scale also means guests remain close to the couple, which makes the reactions around the room especially important to photograph.
Ceremonies in the Ballroom
For larger weddings, the Ballroom currently accommodates ceremonies of around 100–160 guests.
It feels noticeably brighter and more contemporary than the Dining Room, with high ceilings, large chandeliers and full-length windows overlooking the parkland.
The additional space gives me more freedom to photograph the entrance, vows and guests’ reactions from different angles without becoming distracting.
It is particularly useful for couples who want a larger guest list while keeping everyone together within the main house.
Outdoor Ceremonies on the Terrace
Rockbeare Manor also offers outdoor ceremonies on the Terrace.
This brings the parkland directly into the ceremony and creates a much more open setting than the indoor rooms, while the manor itself remains immediately behind the celebration.
Outdoor ceremonies can lead really naturally into drinks and congratulations afterwards because guests are already gathered beside the lawns.
As always, couples should discuss the latest wet-weather arrangements directly with the venue so there is an indoor option they are equally happy with.
Drinks Receptions and Candid Photography
The Terrace and surrounding lawns work beautifully once the ceremony is finished. Guests can move outside for drinks and canapés, catch up with family and friends, and enjoy the parkland without the reception becoming too spread out. That is usually when the documentary side of my photography really takes over.

I normally avoid rushing couples straight into portraits at this point. There is usually far more value in letting you spend some time with everyone first and then stepping away briefly once the reception has settled.

One of Rockbeare Manor’s biggest strengths is that these different looks are all available without needing to leave the estate.
A short portrait walk is usually enough to give us a varied set of photographs before you head back to the celebration.
Couple Photographs Around Rockbeare Manor
The house and grounds give us a mix of elegant and more relaxed portrait settings.
Close to the manor, we can use the Regency architecture, steps, windows and formal features for photographs with a little more structure. Further into the grounds, the lawns, lake and open parkland soften everything and bring much more of the Devon landscape into the gallery.
The venue’s bedrooms and grounds also look towards places including Haldon Belvedere, Cawsand Beacon on Dartmoor and the Cadbury Hills, showing just how open some of the surrounding views can be.
I would never try to use every location simply because it is available. We can choose the areas that work best with the weather and light, spend around ten or fifteen minutes there, and then get you back to everyone.
Golden-Hour and Evening Photography
The open parkland can be particularly good once the stronger daylight begins to soften.
On a clear evening, lower light across the lawns can create a completely different feel from the more polished manor-house photographs earlier in the day. I do not build the entire wedding around a fixed golden-hour session because the weather rarely behaves that neatly.
Instead, I keep an eye on the conditions. If the light starts looking particularly good, we can step outside for ten or fifteen minutes and use the parkland before returning to the celebration.
Once darkness falls, Rockbeare Manor itself becomes another option. The illuminated house and surrounding grounds can give us a final set of evening photographs that feels very different from anything taken during the day.
Wedding Breakfasts in the Ballroom
The Ballroom is the main space for larger wedding breakfasts and currently seats between 50 and 160 guests.
Its high ceilings, contemporary chandeliers and full-length windows make it one of the brightest reception rooms within the house, with views over the parkland continuing to connect the celebration to the grounds outside.
This works particularly well for speeches. There is enough space for me to move quietly around the edges of the room and photograph both the speaker and all the reactions happening across the tables. Half the story of a speech is normally happening away from the person holding the microphone.
I’m looking for the couple laughing, parents becoming emotional, friends anticipating a story and all those little expressions that tell you how the room actually felt. Later, the Ballroom can continue into the evening, with capacity for celebrations of up to around 200 guests.
What Happens if It Rains?
Rockbeare Manor is particularly strong in poor weather because the interiors are not simply backup spaces.
The Drawing Room, Dining Room, Ballroom, Billiard Room and other areas of the house all have their own character, so the photographs can remain varied even if much of the day happens indoors.
The large windows throughout the property also help bring natural light into the rooms.
When the rain eases, we do not need a huge weather window to make use of the grounds.
The Terrace and lawns are right outside the main house, so a short dry spell may be enough for group photographs or a few relaxed portraits.
My approach is to adapt around the conditions rather than letting a weather app dictate the entire wedding.

How I Photograph Weddings at Rockbeare Manor
My approach is relaxed, natural, candid and documentary-led.
A luxury venue does not need luxury wedding photography to mean hours of posing or turning every part of the day into an editorial shoot.
For me, the setting should elevate the photographs without taking over from the people. Rockbeare Manor already provides the beautiful architecture, carefully designed rooms and surrounding parkland. My job is to notice the moments happening within it.
That might be nerves in the Drawing Room, someone reacting during the vows, friends laughing over drinks on the Terrace, a parent becoming emotional during a speech or something completely unexpected happening once the dance floor opens.
I’ll organise family photographs efficiently and give you some simple direction during couple portraits, but most of the wedding is allowed to unfold without interruption.
