Stockbridge Farm Barn is the sort of venue where the building itself immediately gives the wedding plenty of atmosphere.
The barn sits on a small working farm in the Dorset countryside, surrounded by fields and rural views. Its stone, exposed timber and vaulted ceiling bring genuine historic character rather than trying to recreate a rustic look from scratch.
I photographed Maisie and Andrew’s wedding here, which gave me the chance to experience the venue across a full autumn day.
Their celebration included an emotional ceremony inside the barn, confetti outside, autumn portraits around the grounds, wood-fired pizza, live music and a dance floor that properly took off later in the evening.
My approach is relaxed, candid and documentary-led. I’ll help with the parts that genuinely need some direction, but most of the wedding is about letting you enjoy the day while I concentrate on the moments happening around you.

A Historic Barn Wedding Venue Near Sherborne
Stockbridge Farm Barn sits in what the venue describes as Thomas Hardy country, around four miles south of historic Sherborne.
The barn itself is medieval and retains many of its original features, including exposed timberwork and the scale of the original agricultural building.
Inside, festoon lighting, suspended flower wheels and soft uplighting add warmth without hiding the structure of the barn.
What I particularly like is that the setting feels characterful without being overly polished.
There is still a working-farm feel around the venue, plenty of countryside outside and enough flexibility for couples to make the day their own.
That works brilliantly for documentary photography.
The venue provides the setting, but it never feels like you have to behave a certain way just because you are getting married somewhere historic.

Ceremonies Inside the Barn
Maisie and Andrew held their ceremony inside the barn.
The stone walls, timber beams and warm lighting gave the room plenty of atmosphere, while the size of the barn kept everyone together and made the reactions around the room a big part of the photographs.
From a photography point of view, I can work quietly around the edge of the space and capture the entrance, vows, first kiss and reactions without continually interrupting what is happening.
The barn currently seats up to 180 guests, so it can work for both intimate celebrations and much larger ceremonies.
Outdoor Ceremonies in the Courtyard
Couples can also marry outside in the courtyard.
The courtyard sits directly in front of the barn and is filled with greenery and flowers during the warmer months, giving outdoor ceremonies a softer countryside feel while keeping the historic barn immediately behind the celebration.
It also makes the transition into the drinks reception really easy.
Guests are already gathered outside, so congratulations, drinks and candid photographs can begin without everyone needing to move across the venue.
Drinks Receptions in the Courtyard
The courtyard is one of the strongest areas of Stockbridge Farm Barn once the formal part of the day finishes.
Guests can gather outside for drinks and canapés, move between the barn and courtyard and use the nearby gardens and grassed areas without becoming too spread out.
That is usually when the documentary side of my photography really takes over.

Couple Photographs Around the Ground
Stockbridge Farm Barn gives us several portrait options without needing to disappear from the reception for long.
Close to the barn, the stone, timber doors, courtyard and farm buildings give the photographs texture and character.
The planted garden in front of the farmhouse works well for family photographs and portraits, while the surrounding Dorset countryside gives us a softer rural backdrop.
For Maisie and Andrew, the autumn colour was a big part of their portraits.
We used the turning leaves, woodland and paths around the venue, which brought loads of warmth into the photographs without needing to create anything elaborate.
I’ll give you enough direction to feel comfortable, but normally ten or fifteen minutes is plenty. The aim is for the portraits to feel like a short break together, not an hour-long photoshoot.
Autumn and Golden-Hour Photography
Maisie and Andrew’s wedding is a really good example of how well Stockbridge Farm Barn works in autumn.
The leaves around the grounds had started turning amber and gold, which completely changed the feel of the photographs compared with a summer wedding. That seasonal colour works especially well against the stone and darker timber around the barn.
Later in the day, softer light across the countryside can give us another opportunity for a few photographs. I never schedule a long golden-hour session and hope the weather cooperates.
Instead, I keep an eye on the conditions. If the light suddenly looks brilliant, we can step outside for ten minutes and then get you straight back to everyone.
That is a big part of how I photograph weddings. The photographs fit around the day rather than the day being organised around photographs.
Wedding Breakfasts and Evening Celebrations
Inside, Stockbridge Farm Barn can seat up to around 180 guests, with a spacious dance floor and a separate Bar & Snug adjoining the main barn.
The venue is also very flexible with catering. Couples can choose their own caterers, and the barn has hosted everything from hog roasts and barbecues to pizza and ice-cream vans. Maisie and Andrew went for wood-fired pizza later in the day, which suited the relaxed atmosphere perfectly.
During speeches, I’m looking beyond whoever has the microphone. Some of my favourite photographs usually come from the reactions around the room: someone laughing before the punchline, a parent getting emotional or friends immediately recognising where a story is heading.
Once the dance floor opens, the photography changes completely. Maisie and Andrew had live music from The Thrillionaires, and by that point the barn was full of dancing, singing and a fair amount of balloon-fuelled chaos. That is when I stop worrying about everything looking neat and concentrate on the energy instead.
What Happens if It Rains?
The advantage of having such a substantial historic barn is that wet weather does not suddenly leave the wedding without a good setting.
The ceremony, drinks, wedding breakfast and evening celebration can all continue inside, and the barn already has enough character that it never feels like a compromise. The separate Bar & Snug also gives guests another indoor area away from the main space.
When the weather improves, the courtyard and gardens are immediately outside. We do not need a huge gap in the rain. Ten dry minutes can be plenty for a few family photographs or a short walk together. The aim is to work with whatever the weather gives us rather than make the entire wedding wait for perfect conditions.

Getting Ready at Stockbridge Farm Barn
The venue has a converted Milking Parlour that can be used as a wedding preparation space.
Stockbridge Farm Barn describes it as a popular Bride’s Room, giving part of the wedding party somewhere private to prepare or simply step away during the day.
For micro weddings, use of the Milking Parlour is currently included both on the wedding day and the preceding day.
Having somewhere onsite can make preparations much easier.
There is less travel, fewer opportunities for delays and more chance for me to photograph the quieter build-up before guests start arriving.
Staying at Stockbridge Farm Barn
Stockbridge Farm Barn currently offers onsite accommodation in two bespoke wooden shepherd huts alongside the converted Milking Parlour.
That gives the couple or a small number of people close to them the option to stay directly at the farm rather than travelling immediately after the wedding.
For larger guest lists, Sherborne and the surrounding Dorset area provide additional accommodation options.
Because onsite accommodation is relatively limited compared with a hotel-style venue, I would recommend confirming exactly who you want to stay at the farm fairly early in the planning process.
Micro Weddings at Stockbridge Farm Barn
Stockbridge Farm Barn also offers a dedicated micro-wedding option for couples planning something smaller.
The current package includes exclusive use, indoor or outdoor ceremony options, tables and chairs, access to the barn facilities, courtyard, gardens, grassed outdoor areas and use of the Milking Parlour.
Smaller weddings can work especially well in a venue like this.
The barn still gives the day plenty of atmosphere, but with fewer guests, the celebration can feel much more intimate and personal.
From a photography perspective, it usually means even more attention can go into the relationships between the people who are actually there rather than trying to document a much larger crowd.
